Letterpress Classes
The Arm offers workshops in our public access letterpress studio. The classes are open to anyone interested in learning to print. No experience is necessary unless otherwise stated in the class description.

LETTERPRESS ON THE VANDERCOOK & C&P PILOT- $150
In this one day workshop for beginners you will learn the basic principles of letterpress printing on the Vandercook proof press. We will go over the parts of the press and how it operates and how to print from metal type, wood type, photopolymer plates and hand cut linoleum and wood blocks.
This one day class will prepare you to use the presses in our studio needing only occasional guidance from the studio personnel. Supplies will be on hand to experiment in printing cards, flyers, posters, coasters & hang tags.

WOOD TYPE INTENSIVE- $95
This new class has been established to serve as a gateway to a new collection of rare wood type that The Arm has recently acquired. Only people who have prior experience printing in our studio and have also taken this class will have access to this type collection.
This four hour class will teach the participants to safely handle and print from fragile antique wood type. We will cover some tips and tricks to make old wood type print well and also cover some period-correct and also unconventional techniques that can be used to get interesting effects from it. After completion of this four hour class you will be given a card allowing you to continue to use this rare wood type with any press booking at The Arm.
Our hope is that this class will prove to be popular. Our intention is to run it as often as we can fill it and to use the proceeds from the class to purchase additional fonts of rare wood type exclusively for the use of those who’ve taken our Wood Type Intensive.

ADVANCED PRINTING ON THE VANDERCOOK- $195
This class is for students who have a basic knowledge of letterpress printing on the Vandercook press, but want to further develop their skills to add new effects to their printing and to complete projects more effectively and efficiently. The class will cover scoring and perforating on the press, foil stamping with the Kwikprint press, embossing, pre-press/design, set up and make ready and troubleshooting.
Whether your ambition with letterpress printing is to create books, job printing, or unique pieces of art, this class will help you to take your printing to the next level.
This class will be taught by Micah Currier, professional letterpress job printer at Bowne & Co. Stationers in NYC.

Space in these workshops is limited so please make your booking as early as possible to ensure your place.
The Arm’s public studio is now open by appointment even late and on the weekends. Press rental for any of The Arm’s Vandercooks or C&P Pilot presses is $20 per hour and one-on-one teaching on any of the presses is available for $50 per hour. Please email if you have any questions.
